I’m a woman, a geek, and a DIYer. I am a feminist, a progressive, and environmentally oriented. At one point, I called myself a technophile, but I find I’m more of a Luddite in the sense of a member of the labor force who demands a fair deal from capital. I believe the means of production should be owned by the producers, that worker-owned cooperatives are the way, that growth for the sake of the stockholders is the most pernicious social cancer we have. That we must learn to live with enough as the goal, and that sufficiency is not punishment, it’s success, while excess is hoarding, and demonstrative of an unmet psychological need. I believe in the value of slow food, slow clothes, slow furniture, slow spaces. I believe in mindful consumption as a means of practicing responsibility and simplicity. I truly believe that I can do anything if I set my mind to it, and I want to help prove that women need not rely on any specialized power to accomplish their goals. Anybody can build something, especially if she starts small and learns as she goes. If I can inspire one person to take a crowbar to something she hates and replace it with something she loves, my work here is done.
